The Curse of the Forgotten Medication
“Guess it’s my turn now” said Alex as she began narrating her favorite scary story while everyone around the campfire sat eagerly waiting for her to start.
“Jennifer, was a 17 year old girl who lived with her mother, Laura in an old apartment. She had been diagnosed with an illness that kept her confined to her home since birth and she regularly had to medicate before bed so that the illness didn’t get worse.”
“Jennifer was homeschooled by Laura and she received all the love and affection that she required from her mother. Laura taught her how to cook, clean, take care of herself and how to spend her daily routine as well.”
“However, there was one rule that Jennifer had to regularly follow, that if she refused would lead to a severe beating from her mother. This rule was to have her medication each and every night.”
“Overtime, Jennifer grew up to be more and more rebellious and she decided to lie to her mother about having her medication on time… She pretended that she ate the pills and went to sleep immediately so that Laura is not suspicious, not realizing that this was a grave mistake…”
“Jennifer woke up next morning feeling lightheaded but she also felt as if she had aged 20 years and that there was a strange stiffness in her body. She walked out of her room but couldn’t find Laura anywhere.”
“She searched the entire apartment but Laura was nowhere to be found. Jennifer started weeping and went to the washroom to wash her face, however when she looked into the mirror she saw herself in the body of a middle aged woman with deteriorated mental health who hasn’t had any social interaction for more than a decade.”
Alex paused, letting the tension build as the fire crackled in the silence. Everyone leaned in, eager to hear what happened next.
“Jennifer screamed,” Alex continued, her voice lowering to a whisper, “but no one could hear her. She ran back to her room, searching for her medication, hoping that taking it now would reverse what had happened. But the bottles were all empty. In a panic, she stumbled upon a letter, hidden under her bed.”
Alex’s eyes gleamed in the firelight as she spoke.
“The letter was from her mother, Laura. It said, ‘You are now who you were always meant to be. The medication wasn’t for your illness—it was to keep you from becoming this. You’ve made your choice, Jennifer. Now, you have to live with it.’”
Alex leaned back, her story finished, the fire casting eerie shadows on her face. The group sat in stunned silence, imagining the horror of being trapped in a life Jennifer could never escape.
